Mix and Match : A Multi-fiber History of Japanese Textiles in a Global Perspective 1750-1970
Conférence de Miki SUGIURA (Université Hôsei/Université de Warwick)
Conférence exceptionnelle dans le cadre du projet Global Japon(s) du Centre de recherches sur le Japon.
Mercredi 5 juin 2019, de 13h à 15h
EHESS (salle 7-37) – 54 boulevard Raspail, 75006 Paris
Most textile histories are spinned by-fiber and separate accounts produced of global histoires of cotton, silk, wool, ramie or synthetics. This talk sets Japan’s textile history in a global context by tracing the changes in the structure of the production of various fibers within the same region as well as across different regions. As a rare country that was the leading producer of several major fiber groups at different points in the 19th and 20th centuries, Japan is uniquely placed to be the experimental ground for the explorations in new global mixed-fiber textile history.
