Postdoctoral fellowship East Asian Environment

For the 2019-20 academic year, The School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences in Paris, France announces a postdoctoral fellowship in East Asian Environmental Humanities to Ph.D. graduates of exceptional promise, to provide the opportunity to engage with the Annales scholars as they are turning their dissertations into manuscripts.

Asia can be considered a constructed region consisting of countries that took a variety of paths in the past, especially in terms of industrialization. These countries experienced and continue to encounter different environmental conjunctures while dealing with common challenges such as resources exhaustion, industrial pollution, biological extinctions and climate change.

Priority will be given to research projects drawing on primary sources and data in the vernacular languages of East and Northeast Asia (Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Tibetan, Mongolian), and to candidates willing and able to engage in a dialogue with scholars and scholarship from East and Northeast Asia.

Stemming from spaces and places located in East Asia and pertaining to pre-modern, modern or contemporary periods, submitted projects should also strive to make clear how their topics could open up on regional or global comparisons relevant to environmental studies.

Whatever the discipline involved, the project submitted will need to be firmly positioned in the historiographical debates of the environmental studies. Beyond academia, the project should demonstrate awareness of the broader critical impact on the scholarship on Asian societies.
